Empathy + Action = Trauma Informed Care

Course Description

Provided by Samaritan’s Boccolini Institute

Professional Caregiver looking at patient

Trauma informed care is often underutilized by healthcare teams leading to an increased risk of retraumatizing patients. Ineffective response to trauma behaviors often contributes to ineffective symptom management, threatened team dynamics, and a disproportionate use of resources.

The program provides a realistic implementation plan for individuals, teams, and organizations using a universal precautions strategy to improve patient outcomes.

About The Mary Ann Boccolini Institute of Education, Research & Innovation

The Boccolini Institute at Samaritan is dedicated to providing innovative education and experiences that enhance teamwork and collaboration in healthcare, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes. Our mission is to be a catalyst for excellence in hospice and palliative care education, fostering interprofessional learning and advancing the field through research and innovation.

We offer a wide range of clinical experiences and rotations for medical residents, fellows, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, providing hands-on learning in hospice and palliative care settings. The Institute is committed to developing the next generation of compassionate caregivers through unique programs such as our DNP residency in advanced illness management and social work internships.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of continuing education, offering joint accreditation for interprofessional education and a state-of-the-art learning management system. Joint accreditation is the leading model for interprofessional collaboration aimed at improving health care through team based continuing education. This accreditation allows Samaritan to efficiently offer continued education credits from multiple disciplines, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists and social workers.

Our focus extends beyond traditional education to include community outreach, research initiatives, and innovative programs. We strive to address the complex challenges in healthcare, including social determinants of health and caregiver support. At the Boccolini Institute, we’re not just teaching healthcare – we’re shaping the future of compassionate, team-based care delivery that makes a real difference in patients’ lives.

In support of improving patient care, Samaritan is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
