Inpatient hospice care is provided where people live, most often at home, and also in assisted-living or nursing-home communities. When given a choice, home is where seven out of 10 Americans say they wish to be at the end of life.[1]
Supporting Hospice Patients with More Intensive Needs
Hospice care is the leading choice for comfort care at home for people with advanced illness. It offers comfort, support, and dignity when physicians feel the patient’s life expectancy is limited to six months or less if the illness follows its normal course.
Sometimes, severe pain or other symptoms require an advanced level of care that is more effectively provided during a short stay in an inpatient hospice facility. If your loved ones’ needs intensify, the hospice team may recommend transferring him or her to the inpatient level of care. The goal of inpatient hospice care is to control severe pain and symptoms so that your loved one can return home to their family and familiar surroundings, if possible, and resume hospice care at home.
Hospice care is also provided in the nation’s growing number of stand-alone hospice facilities. In fact, the opening of South Jersey’s only freestanding inpatient hospice center — The Samaritan Center at Voorhees — is planned before year’s end on Route 73. Samaritan has been providing this level of care since 2005 at its dedicated inpatient hospice center within Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly. Both inpatient settings are designed to provide a peaceful, home-like environment where the hospice team provides short-term symptom relief around the clock for the comfort of our patients and peace of mind for their families.

As one of the first hospices in New Jersey, Samaritan provides hospice care in the setting that’s most appropriate for each person’s needs throughout the course of illness. Hospice care is a benefit of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration. Most commercial insurance plans also cover hospice with applicable co-pays and deductibles. Each patient’s needs are unique, so families are encouraged to call Samaritan and speak with the hospice nurses directly about the individual needs of their loved ones.
